On Sunday afternoon, August 12, 2007, Sebastien Bourdais drove his McDonald's Cosworth/DP01 to a commanding victory at the Champ Car Generac Grand Prix of Road America. So dominant was the Frenchman’s performance on the classic, high speed American roadcourse that he led 51 of the 53 laps around the 14-turn, 4.048-mile circuit. While Robert Doornbos and his #14 Minardi Team USA Cosworth powered DP0 strained to keep Bourdais’ rear wing in their sites, it was to no avail as he would as he would eventually lose the plot when he ran wide in turn three on lap number 24. At that point, Graham Rahal’s Medi|Zone DP01 went whizzing by, inheriting the second. Then, Doornbos was overtaken for third at the entry of Turn 5 by his Minardi Team USA teammate, Dan Clarke. Unfortunately, the duo collided in the exchange, and Doornbos' front wing was shattered. Clark would keep charging, though, moving forward from third, ultimately passing Graham Rahal for second and holding station in P2 for the remainder of the race. Rahal, the 18 year-old American, would hang on to place third overall. In fourth was Oriol Servia’s Indeck Cosworth/DP01. Fifth on the day in the Midwest was Alex Tagliani. Belgium’s Jan Heylen drove his #34 Grafiprint DP01 to sixth. Tristan Gommendy flashed across the finish line in seventh with Justin Wilson behind him in eighth. Ninth went to Bruno Junqueira and 10th to Swiss pilot Neel Jani.
The Champ Car World Series will now pack up the plantation and head to Europe to compete as in the Champ Car Grand Prix of Belgium at the Zolder circuit (August 24-26). One week later will come the Bavaria Champ Car Grand Prix of Holland, set to run at Assen, Holland from August 31 through September 2.
With only six races remaining on the 2007 Champ Car World Series schedule, Bourdais — the three-time series champion poised to leave America for Formula 1 in 2008 — leads the championship with 250 points. Robert Doornbos is second with 213 points, while Will Power is now third with 197 points.
