Just seven days after the last round of the Motocross World Championship at the Fairyhouse Racecourse in the Republic of Ireland, the field jumps over the channel for the Dutch GP in Lierop.
Heading into the weekend all three championships still hang in the balance with just two rounds of the men’s current season remaining, while the women’s championship comes to a close this weekend. Things are really starting to reach boiling point and with the women’s inaugural champion set to be crowned on Sunday, it’s sure to be a weekend for the fans to remember.
Four ladies enter the weekend’s activities with a chance of the title. Livia Lancelot currently leads the standings from Steffi Laier, Maria Franke and Larissa Papenmeier. Livia will return to the scene where one year prior she lost her World Cup lead to Katherine Prumm. Chasing Livia down in 2008 will be Steffi Laier, who will be keen to add to her 2005 World Cup win. Steffi has been in impressive form winning five moto’s in the season so far and will be hoping that a sixth win will help her leapfrog Livia in the final Championship standings.
In MX1 David Philippaerts goes into the penultimate round with a slender five point advantage over Steve Ramon. David had a weekend to forget 12 months ago when he slumped to fourteenth overall and will have to improve in 2008 if he is to head into the final race weekend in possession of the coveted red plate. Tanel Loek will be hoping to continue where he left off in Eire with another win, however the sandy track conditions might not play into Tanel’s favor.
MX2 sees the battle of the KTM riders commence once more as Tommy Searle and Tyla Rattray duke it out to become the MX2 World Champion. Tyla managed to extend his lead over Tommy to twenty seven points after the last round and will hope to further secure his championship credentials after a successful outing on Sunday in the two moto’s.
Tommy will be hoping that he experiences no more mechanical glitches this weekend after an issue with the rear brake saw him slump to gate 25 in Dublin. Despite this he still managed to leave the weekend with an impressive 4-2 finish in the two moto’s and a second overall to keep the pressure up on team mate Tyla.
Rui Goncalves still has a chance to make it up to third in the championship if he can string together a couple of impressive displays in the final two rounds and could make it a clean sweep for KTM on the championship podium.
Practice and qualifying is on Saturday whilst the races are on Sunday.
